In 2014, Sharjah’s visionary leader, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, established the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) through Decree No. 6 of 2014. This move was driven by the need to keep pace with Sharjah’s rapid development and growth.

SRTA’s Mission:

Since its inception, SRTA has been dedicated to supporting the government’s goals and aligning with His Highness’s vision for Sharjah. SRTA has a multifaceted mission, including:

  1. Transportation Services: Providing essential road and maritime transportation services, along with other transport-related facilities and activities. This includes an integrated public transport system aimed at delivering high-quality services.

  2. Promoting Public Transportation: Actively encouraging the use of public transportation and expanding the modern road network with state-of-the-art traffic systems following international standards.

  3. Infrastructure Management: Overseeing road and construction projects, from planning and design to construction and maintenance. Safety, security, and environmental compatibility are paramount considerations.

  4. Strategic Planning: Creating both short and long-term strategic plans for road projects in coordination with relevant authorities.

  5. Traffic Management: Proposing toll gate systems, managing traffic signboards, road markings, and issuing initial approvals for billboards.

  6. Transport Policy: Developing the general policy for the transport sector, proposing and implementing strategic plans, inspecting the transport sector, and setting standards and regulations for transport activities.

  7. Driver Training: Offering training programs for taxi, public transport, and intercity bus drivers, as well as issuing, renewing, and canceling professional licenses for all employees involved in relevant activities.

Through these initiatives, SRTA has been instrumental in enhancing transportation services and infrastructure in Sharjah, contributing to the emirate’s continued progress.
