Introduction:

The journey of environmental stewardship in the United Arab Emirates has evolved over four decades, culminating in the establishment of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in 2016. This transformation reflects the nation’s commitment to addressing climate change and preserving its unique environmental heritage.

Leadership: Minister: HE Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak

  • A distinguished leader with a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering.
  • Previously served as Assistant Undersecretary for the Care and Capacity Building Sector and as the UAE Government Spokesperson during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vision, Mission, and Values:

Vision: Sustainable environmental and food security. Mission: Adopting a climate-neutral approach, protecting ecosystems, and ensuring sustainable development. Values: Openness, Tolerance, Wellbeing, Agility & Proactiveness, Transparency, Integration.

Strategic Goals:

  1. Developing agricultural business and responsible investment.
  2. Boosting economic value through environmental health programs.
  3. Achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
  4. Preserving biodiversity for sustainable development.

Main Goals:

  1. Enhancing legislative enforcement, sectoral strategies, and municipal work programs.
  2. Improving the national biosecurity system.
  3. Managing effective participation in regional and international organizations.
  4. Promoting research and development programs for food, water, and environmental security.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop plans, strategies, and policies for environment, agriculture, animal husbandry, and fisheries.
  • Increase sector contributions to GDP for food security.
  • Integrate environmental protection into socio-economic development plans.
  • Enhance the quality of agricultural, livestock, and fisheries production.
  • Propose legislation and plans to mitigate climate change impact.
  • Monitor global climate change issues.
  • Join international treaties and conventions for collaboration.
  • Represent the country in relevant international organizations.

Sustainability Development Goals:

Aligned with the United Nations SDGs, the UAE focuses on poverty reduction, zero hunger, good health, education, gender equality, clean water, clean energy, economic growth, innovation, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace, justice, and partnerships.

MOCCAE’s Sustainability Efforts:

In line with UAE Vision 2021, MOCCAE actively pursues SDGs 12, 13, 14, and 15 through initiatives such as responsible consumption policies, climate action plans, marine habitat mapping, and efforts towards zero hunger.
